音楽家・アーティストの坂本龍一さんのインスタレーション作品を紹介する個展「音を視る 時を聴く seeing sound, hearing time」に行ってまいりました。
坂本さんの創作活動における長年の関心ごとであったという、音と時間をテーマとしたインスタレーション作品が美術館の屋内外空間に展開されています。
個人的に私は色彩と時間との関係、「時間」について、色彩と音の存在について度々考えることがあるので、坂本さんが追求し続けたことの中に「時間とは何か」という深い問いかけが在ったことを知り、この個展に足を運んでみたいと思いました。

 

「色」は時間とともに移ろいます。空の色は同じ色を留めることは無く、時間とともに常に変化してゆきます。古い染織品の色彩についても同様で、江戸時代に天然染料によって染められた色も時間とともに褪色の色合いをみせています。褪色の色にみられる独特の美しさを生み出すのは「時間」です。
色と音の存在と関係については、例えば色彩のグラデーションは自分にとり、様々な音の音階を目でみているように感じられます。色彩のそれは音の余韻を目で追っているようでもあります。例えば青というひとつの色の中にも、人の視力が感知できないほどの差異で無限に近い青の色合いがあるはずです。ひとつの音が鳴り消えるまでの間にも、人の聴覚では拾えない音、聞こえない音が空気中で音を変化させながら響き続けているように思えています。色と音の存在がとても近い位置に在るような、とても似ている存在であるように思えるのです。
色と時間について、時間とは何か、色と音の存在については、今こちらに記しきれないほど深く自分に働いているものごとのように思えます。

 

私はインスタレーション作品にあまり馴染みがないので、大きな空間に表現された大型展示作品の全てを感受できたか分かりませんが、鑑賞者として自分なりに表現の世界を体験できたように思えています。

I visited an exhibition, “seeing sound, hearing time.” A composer and an artist Ryuichi Sakamoto’s, installation art on the theme of “sound and time,” which he has long pursued with great interest throughout his creative career, are displayed both in and out of the museum.

 

I myself often think about the relationship between color and time as well as color and sound because I feel that the graduation of color resembles sound scales. Within one color, blue, there are infinite shades of blue. This, to me, is like looking at different scales of sounds. Therefore, I think there is a close relationship between color and sound.
The color transitions over time. The color of the sky never stays the same, it constantly is changing with time. This makes me think that there is a strong relationship between color and time. Same is true for the color of fabric. Fabric from the Edo period fades over time. It is the“time” that creates this beautiful color.
When I learnt about one of the concepts Sakamoto continued to pursue was the question of “What is time?”, which intrigued my interest. That’s why I decided to go to this exhibition.

 

I’m not very familiar with installation art, so I don’t know if I was able to fully appreciate the large-scale exhibits that were displayed in vast spaces. However, as a viewer, I felt like I was able to experience the world of installation art that was expressed using space in my own way.
